WARNING: SOAPBOX MOMENT
I am so tired of ignorant people – friends, family, colleagues – who believe ostracism and extreme punitive behavior is the appropriate response to someone who has battled addiction and is in recovery.
I am so tired of arrogant people – friends, family, colleagues – who enable addictive behaviors by ignoring the reality right in front of them yet act shocked and stunned with the addict relapses.
I am so tired of anyone who doesn’t even try to understand what’s going on in the brain of someone battling addiction, someone in recovery, or anyone who is dealing with this terrible disease.
People who do not understand #addiction often believe ostracism and extreme punitive measures will help a person in their recovery. NOTHING could be further from the truth.
Do your homework. Jump down off your “I’m not an addict” pedestal. Go to an Al-Anon meeting. Then go again. Ask someone in recovery what will help them. Talk to a professional in the addiction recovery industry.
Just, please, stop being ignorant and arrogant and enabling. Stop creating your own false reality of how things should be in recovery. It’s disgusting and disappointing. And some times even life-threatening.
In other words, GET A GRIP…cuz honestly, you’re not all that.
But an individual in recovery? They are…they are all that, and more.
And THAT is reality.
